The River continues: Next Steven/Roy book complete!

It’s been a few weeks, thought I’d check in with you and see if you’ve got everything in order for the holidays. No? Well, neither do I. But I am enjoying the season. Homemade Chex mix – mmm mmm. Hope you are enjoying things, too.

It’s always exciting to get emails from my readers. Today I received an email asking when the next book in The River series would be ready. “I’m dying here!” it said. What timing! I thought. I just finished writing it yesterday! No kidding! And good thing, too. I don’t want any of my readers to expire on me!

Now it goes into the editing process, which will take a while, but I’m expecting it to be available for pre-order soon. While I’ve ordered a ton of things via pre-order on Amazon over the years, this will be the first time I’ll be on the other end of things – listing the book in advance. Apparently if you pre-order the Kindle book, it’ll be automatically delivered to your Kindle on the day of release. Imagine, cranking up your Kindle at the end of a long day, and — poof! — there’s a new Steven and Roy book!

As soon as the pre-order is available, I’ll shoot out an email to everyone on my email list. If you haven’t signed up for my list, please do, because there’s a Steven/Roy novella coming that will be made available only to people on the email list. And I don’t use the list for anything other than new release announcements.

BOTRcover-smallOn another front, the first book in The River series, The Bank of the River, is specially priced at Amazon for just 99 cents. If you have a friend who’s been thinking of jumping into The River, now would be an excellent time to gift them this book! It’s on sale through January 2.

OK – that’s all for now. More on the new book as the pre-order comes together and the editing finishes up! Have a great weekend.

Three things, some news, and holiday thoughts

Hello! It’s been a little while, so I thought I’d stop writing for a moment and fill you in on what I’ve been up to!

FIRST and FOREMOST, I want to let you know that The River series continues…I’m working on the next Steven and Roy book right now, and it’s about 75% done. This one has really surprised me. I dislike predictability (unless it’s with regards to my car or my DVR) so I was delighted when this new book took a surprise turn and freaked me out a little! I hope you’ll like it. I’m really excited to finish it up and make it available – maybe sometime around the first part of December, right when we’re all trying to schedule parties and order presents from Amazon!

SECOND, I wanted to tell you about the next Steven and Roy book after that – it will be a free novella, a “thank you” to my readers, available only to members of my email list! It won’t be available on Amazon. If you aren’t already on my email list, why not take a moment and sign up?  I only use the list to send out announcements of new releases and special sales, so you don’t need to be worried about receiving a lot of pestering email from me. And of course I’ll never share it, ever.

THIRD, I was hoping you’d take a moment to let me know what you thought of The Impossible Coin by sharing your review at Amazon! The kindest compliment you can give an author is to tell a friend about their book, and to post a review! Sales have been good, and I’ve been happy at the reception. Amazon reviews really, really matter, so if you enjoyed it (or even if you didn’t) would you take a moment to let me know by posting a review there?

FINALLY, as we head into the holiday season and a discussion of things we’re thankful for, I want you to know how thankful I am that you’ve supported my passion for writing. It’s made me able to write more, and to keep the stories of Steven and Roy and Deem and Winn coming, and I’ve extremely grateful for that. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with you and yours: lots of turkey (or tofurky, if you prefer) and potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberries – and pumpkin pie. Some good football. Quality time with the ones you care about. That’s what matters. Enjoy!

“The Impossible Coin” now available

The Impossible Coin, the second book in The Downwinders series, is available just in time for Halloween!

Downwind: the area of the United States that received the brunt of the fallout from nuclear testing. As a result, humans developed cancers and congenital malformations… and so did the creatures in the River, the place where people with “the gift” see things others cannot.

Young Winn has recently discovered he has this ability, though he hardly knows how to use it. When his friend Brent suggests they search for treasure in the hills surrounding their Tucson suburb, Winn joins him and puts his newfound skills to use. They discover a cave filled with mutated ghosts possessing unusual powers. Here, Winn finds something so incredible, it begins a nightmare that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

Winn’s mother is distant and uninterested in mentoring his abilities, so Winn turns to Marty, a neighbor who steers him toward a solution. On the way, they meet Jeanette, a crazy but prophetic resident of their trailer court, and Ida, a firecracker who gave up part of herself to confront a similar nightmare.

If the ghosts in the cave were normal, Winn and Brent might stand a chance. But the ghosts are downwind, where radiation changed everything…

The Impossible Coin is a fast-paced adventure with an unusual twist on ghosts. It is the second book in The Downwinders series, but can be read stand-alone.

The Kindle version of The Impossible Coin is available exclusively at Amazon! If you’re looking for the paperback, it will be available at Amazon within a day or so. I hope you enjoy this latest installment in the River… it’s one of my favorites.

New Downwinders novel: “The Impossible Coin” releases late October

The next book in The Downwinders series, The Impossible Coin, will be released on Amazon in late October, 2014.

TIC cover 200x299The Downwinders is a series in The River universe, using elements and some characters from The River series. It’s set in the US southwest in places known as “downwind” from the Nevada Test Site, sixty-five miles northwest of Las Vegas, where hundreds of above-ground and underground nuclear tests were conducted from 1952 to 1992.
The mushroom clouds from the tests could be seen as far away as St. George, UT, over a hundred miles away. And since the winds carry the fallout from west to east, a wide area of southern Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado were impacted. The closer to the test site you were, the more radiation you got. Deem and Winn live and work in one of the places most heavily impacted by the fallout, southern Nevada.

The damage done to humans living downwind was real. In 1990, the US Congress, recognizing the damage that had been done to “downwinders,” passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. The law was meant to reimburse people living in the fallout areas who had suffered “increased incidence of cancers, non-cancerous thyroid diseases, and congenital malformations.”

Deem and Winn first appeared in the novel Devil’s Throat, currently available at Amazon.

BOBRcover-smallWhile each book can be read stand-alone, you might enjoy The Impossible Coin better if you read the prior book in the series, Blood Oath, Blood River, first.
